Late Night Consoling

46
An interesting point came up in a conversation I was having with someone the other day about Sony's upcoming PSP handheld gaming system: if this is truly going to be the first handheld gaming system capable of doing real 3D graphics...doesn't that mean developers are going to have to spend as much time and money developing games as they did for the PSOne? If Sony's smart, they'll make the development process as simple as possible. Heck, they should provide ways to get PSOne games working easily on the system. Otherwise Nintendo's comparatively simple Game Boy hardware is going to have more games faster than Sony can possibly keep up with. Not being a developer I can't tell if that's going to be the case from what little we know about the hardware at this point. But Sony's history with the PS2 (and rumors about the insane complexity of the "Cell" technology at the core of the PS3) doesn't give them a whole lot of credibility in the easy-to-develop-for department. I'll be very interested to see how many totally original games get developed for the PSP versus ports from other platforms. For better or worse, the GBA library is totally riddled with ports (the merits of which are debatable -- but that's an argument for another night), which has done a great deal to get big name games out for the platform in a very short period of time. We'll see how Sony manages to compete with that.

Xbox Half-Life 2 Still Coming to Xbox
Forget what you may have heard earlier today, as GameSpy Daily has confirmed that Half-Life 2 is still coming to the Xbox. The quote they received from Valve's Doug Lombardi says that they will be announcing an Xbox release date later this year.
Dreamcast Dreamcast Servers Going Offline
hal9000 dropped me a line to let me know that Sega has announced that as of this month, Sega will be taking most of their Dreamcast game servers offline. They will not be taking the Phantasy Star Online or PSO Ep. 2 servers offline, but for those of you still playing older games like the 2k series or Quake, this means the end of an era.
GameBoy Advance New GBA SP Colors
Nintendo today announced that they have sold over a million GBA SP units since the system went on sale in March, and to celebrate, they're rolling out two new colors: Onyx (black, like the Japanese model) and Flame (red). Details and images of the two new colors can be found at IGN tonight.
PS2 Xbox Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II Interview
HomeLAN has conducted an interview with Dave Maldonado of Black Isle Studios, talking with the lead designer about their upcoming PS2 and Xbox title Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II. There's not much in the way of new information here, but it does offer some general info on how this game improves on the original.
GameBoy Advance GBA DBZ Q&A
GameSpot has conducted a Q&A with Chris Lundeen, the producer at Atari on Dragon Ball Z: Taiketsu an upcoming fighting game for Game Boy Advance that was announced earlier today.
PS2 Splashdown Q&A
Also at GameSpot tonight is a Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild Q&A, talking with some of the development team at Rainbow Studios about their upcoming quirky driving game.
GameCube Star Fox 2 Trailer
IGN has posted the Star Fox 2 trailer that was shown at E3 last month. Like all of their major movie releases of late, this is available for free in a streaming media format, or as a download for subscribers.
GameCube PSOne The Twin Snakes Side-by-Side
A neat little article is up at IGN tonight that puts Megal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes right up against its PSOne progenitor. It's easy to forget just how much graphics have advanced since the original, particularly since the game looked so good at the time, and this article does a nice job of illustrating that.

TMNT Q&A
A brief interview with an unnamed representative for Konami is up at Computer and Video Games tonight, chatting about their upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. It is indeed short, but among other things is a confirmation that there will only be two-player co-op in the game, largely because of scheduling restraints. There's also a teaser about the planned GBA connectivity for the GameCube version of the game.
PS2 Xbox Argonaut, Malice Not Dead
Also at CvG tonight is a conversation with Jez San of Argonaut, who comments on the current status of the company and Malice, which was recently dropped from their publisher VU Games. Jez sez (HAH! I'm unbelievably clever!) that the company intends to stick it out, and that they are actively searching for a new publisher for the long-in-development Malice.

Acclaim Raises Some Dough
Following the shakeup at Acclaim last week, the company announced today that it has raised an additional $13 million in common stock sales.
PS2 Small Killzone Detail
CvG has posted two teeny tidbits about Killzone, the still-unanounced shooter from Sony Europe. The first is a confirmation that the name has become Killzone, and not Kin as it was known at one point, and the second is word that the game features a Max Payne-like "bullet time" feature, where time slows down.

Namco Q&A
GamerFeed has translated a Q&A with Hiroaki Yotoriyama, a producer at Namco. It's very brief and extremely general, focusing on the transition from 2D to 3D and how it has affected game design.

Misc. Media/Previews
HomeLAN has a hands-on look at the Xbox version of Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, while GameSpot has new screenshots from The Italian Job (Xbox) and CvG has new media from Virtual On Marz (PS2). Over at IGN there's a hands-on report on the co-op mode in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (everything), as well as new trailers from Final Fantasy XI and R-Type Final (both PS2).

Console Game of the Evening: Radiant Silvergun for the Sega Saturn. "For me, shooters don't get any better than this. Insane 2D action fueled by seven types of weapons, great music, and classic over the top Treasure boss encounters. And we can thank RS for (in essence) spawning Ikaruga, which also rocks." (submitted by NoFace).

I've never played it. I've been dying to for years though. If anyone knows where I can find a copy, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Keeping in mind, of course, that the game was never officially released, so I don't consider this warez (it's a fine line to be sure). I know the developers leaked it online at one point, but I never knew anyone who found it.

I found the completed version in a bin of less than fully legitimate software in a very small store in Thailand..before that I only had the incomplete/buggy/missing the cinemas version..

If you can't secure the full version by next weekend, shackmsg me and we'll work something out.

incomplete version should be less than 100 megs compressed, full version is a great deal larger

hey, and on that topic, does that mean Half Life (DC) and Star Fox 2 (SNES) are ok to talk about on here?

Nope. TK is an exception because it was never released and the developers themselves leaked it as a way of getting revenge on EA for canceling their game.

Not the same thing, but Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style (for the PSOne) used the Thrill Kill engine.

Never played it myself, but it was released.

I had an illegal leaked copy that I bought in Singapore. You could play it for a bit, but it would lock the PS1 at random intervals.

      It wasn't THAT bad.
